if you are looking for an enjoyable headphone. One that is pleasant and pleasing to listen to after a long day at work, just get a pair of these. I have had mine since the end of 2016. I was able to jump into the original drop of the HD6xx. I have bought several other headphones throughout this time and I always ended up with these.
the 6xx lacks quantity in bass, but it does not lack quality. it has enough for genres like Jazz, not enough for other genres though. I am currently powering my 6xx through the Massdrop Liquid Carbon and it just such a beautiful pairing. There is zero fatigue. the liquid carbon adds a bit of umph on the bass too.
these are great headphones for vocals. Male & female
After almost 3 years of buying and selling headphones, these are still sitting on my desk, because I have not found a better value than these anywhere
From the painless ordering process to making sure that the product arrived on time professionally packaged, along with an invoice to the actual product itself - the HD 6XX - Wow! I have been listening to music for over 40 years and have never heard my music like this before. Little nuances that were never heard before come out here. Not like hearing it for the first time, but like hearing a different mix of the same song. Very impressive Drop, please give yourselves a big hand for making these beautiful headphones even more available for all to enjoy!
Open backs project sound both towards your ears and out the sides of the earpieces.
This makes the sound feel as if they are coming from further away. Good for replicating the directions of where each vocals and instruments are coming from; like at a concert. Close backs sound as if the music is coming from the centre of your head; you get less "directional" experience but they feel more intimate.
Open backs leak sound so if you are riding on public transport, the people sitting next to you might look at you sideways wonder why you are playing music for everyone around you.
Most high end headphones are open back so don't worry about losing any sound quality from the leakage!
A+ on build quality and comfort for these. Know you will an amp to ge the most out of these. I took a cheap approach and got a dragonfly red but it worked well enough for my needs.
In fact, there is nothing extra natural and special about these headphones. It is absolutely incomprehensible to me why gentlemen audiophiles praise these headphones so much, it speaks of their incompetence. Especially when they start telling tales about how these are the best headphones under $1000 or other similar nonsense. The HD 6XX are absolutely inferior to my German studio headphones, which can still be found today for $140. Specifically, HD 6XX are inferior in depth and volume of the stage, as well as in transparency and detail, and are also inferior in bass. I'm not saying that HD 6XX is bad, but just nothing special. Perhaps the headphones will play better after a long warm-up, but this is not a fact. Do I recommend 6XX? Go to the nearest Guitar Center and choose headphones that suit your ears, this is the best solution. You will see that, unfortunately, it is not always the case that something that is expensive can produce sound for its money, and this applies not only to headphones.
Sennheiser HD 6XX is simply a well-promoted brand.
I also want to add information about service on Massdrop. This is my first time making a purchase here on the site. I ordered headphones on April 18, although in my orders they simply changed the information to April 25, so let it be on their conscience. In general, in reality, I received the headphones after 2 weeks because instead of headphones they sent me two desk mats that I did not order. I had to contact support and take photos of what I received; in general, there were unnecessary problems and the waiting time to receive the headphones was 2 weeks. Orders from China are now arriving faster. In short, this is my first negative experience of shopping on Massdrop.
Very smooth and laid back sound. Nothing is artificially emphasized or boosted !
I've had these headphones a a few weeks. Upon my initial testing, they sounded kind of dull compared to other headphones and ear buds I had used in the past. After a days of use with a Fosi SK02 headphone amp, the improved immensely and I now find them pleasant and refined. I'm not a bass-head and these headphones suit my needs for hours-long listening sessions.
If you’re looking for something in the < $200 range or even < $300 range, this is the best thing you can get for the money. The only thing you need to look out for is it’s an open-back design, and it lets in much more noise in than I thought on a plane. However, if you mainly use this on a desk or in a quiet room, it’s a no-brainer to get this headset. I’ve tried a ton of gaming headsets like Logitech G Pro X 2 and Razer Blackshark V2 Pro, etc., and HD 6XX is miles above their sound quality.
The headphones work well but be careful claiming warranty. The cable started to malfunction and after contacting support I was explicitly promised a new unit free of charge but instead was issued a refund. When I asked for the original agreement to be honored I was told there is nothing they were willing to do and: "Feel free to place a new order for the headphones if you wish though." After a few more emails I was given a $20 credit and conceded to "[feeling] free to place a new order" but because of current exchange rates and duty I had to pay an additional $65 or so. They refuse to reimburse me. Very unlikely I will be ordering from here again.

Great sound quality, but clamps too tight
The sound is great. I later bought Focal Clear, but I still listen to the 6XX from time to time. However, the original pads are not very comfortable. It also clamps too tight.
Extremely impressed with the 6XX's ability to create fantastic translation throughout the mixing/mastering process from DAW to car. I was also impressed with the packaging and attention to detail on every point.
tl;dr were great but now not so much
So I actually wrote a much more positive version of this review a few days ago, recommending this headset outright, despite the initial clamping force being too high (it loosened after a couple of days), and my taste being slightly bass heavier (only a matter of taste). all in all they spent a few good years with me, and I don't regret my purchase. they're a good starting point, need no additional gear to drive, and sound great. However, seemingly as a response to this review, they started misbehaving. the headphones now produce a rattle in the left earpiece whenever a low bass tone is played, and they have begun to pop like crazy. I made sure all the connections were ok and that there's no debris or dust anywhere. I also tested the sound on another device, other plugs in my PC, and just to make sure I wasn't insane used other headphones to make sure it wasn't part of the music. Thinking back, I guess I have heard the occasional pop once in a while over the past year.
I might attempt to fix them, since I'm reasonably capable and have a guess as to why, but also disappointed they lasted only 4 years. they might be a dud, or maybe dropping them a couple of times really ruined them somehow. not sure if I recommend them so strongly anymore.
I am trying these as my first open back cans and I absolutely love the feel of them. I’ve only ever used closed backs (DT 770s and others) and IEMs (truthear hexa) prior to them. This is like a breath of fresh air. I love how it feels a lot arier than closed backs.
